A Free Online Solar Rollers 2D Course - with Board Game
We are working to quickly adapt the full Solar Rollers online course for a much wider audience this year - the many high school students from all backgrounds who are looking for engaging, relevant curriculum that can move them into a career in clean energy and electric vehicles. This online overview unit will take students through the standalone clean energy system behind a Solar Roller, the key concepts associated with Solar Rollers racing as a learning competition, and the development of 2D prototypes of standalone solar EVs for the board game.
2D?
Axing one dimension will make this course as accessible as possible and free to high school students. No kit required - only standard supplies such as paper, scissors and access to a printer. We hope to offer a full printed game for classrooms as well. Each student will work to incorporate key clean energy concepts as they design a 2D miniature prototype Solar Roller. This prototype - and it’s calculated attributes for energy production, storage and use - will become that student’s gamepiece for the Solar Rollers 2D Board Game.
A Board Game?
Board games are where it’s at these days. In fact, humanity is spending about $10 billion a year on them, and 22% of board gamers report spending over $1000 on new games each year. They’re engaging, they’re challenging, they’re social, and they’re not just another solo experience in front of a screen. They play well in dining rooms, classrooms, and tournaments, without requiring large in-person events that might present health issues this year.
So Game On!
A Big YEAR?
Our goal is to bring many, many more students into the Solar Rollers universe this year, generating broad participation with Solar Rollers 2D’s low barrier to entry. That means more students coming into a refined, lower cost hands-on Solar Rollers 3D program next year.
